Guess who pressed the Shift key for 8+ seconds? I found a solution to turn the annoying feature off here:http://www.hyperorg.com/blogger/mtarchive/002052.html 
I pressed both shift keys at the same time, and all problems were resolved. Oh, how happy I am :) ! One of the most annoying features of Windows XP By far.
